Spilliaert (1881 – 1946) was a predominantly autodidactic artist from Belgium. His greatest works were mainly produced in the watercolour, gouache and charcoal mediums, often featuring solitary characters suspended in dream-like realities. He’s also known for an excessive use of black. (I first came across Spilliaert’s Vertigo on Dylan Trigg’s blog, Side Effects, used in a short discussion of Blaise Pascal’s near-death experience.
